You are doing enough.
Many women today struggle with symptoms of burnout without even realizing it. Chronic stress has become a norm in our everyday lives and before we know it, we are hooked on patterns of perfectionism, over-functioning, and incessant worry about the next things on our to-do lists. We’re constantly stuck in cycles of anticipation and planning, never being able to fully quiet our minds until we are dead tired, and our head finally hits the pillow.
We are the masterful multi-taskers, the high achievers, and the productivity stars! We are the project managers, calendar coordinators, vacation tour guides, meal preppers, cheerleaders, advocates, and nurturers. We’ve spent years being rewarded for these useful skills, often being encouraged by others and told that we’re an inspiration.
And yet while it may look impressive and seamless on the outside, you too may be feeling emotionally exhausted, overwhelmed, and tapped out on the inside. Maybe parts of you even know this, but anytime you try to slow down the thoughts get more consuming, and your brain tells you to just carry on like the powerhouse lady boss that you are.
But recently, the pep talks and minimal bouts of “self-care” sprinkled in don’t seem to be helping. You’re finding it hard to sleep and feel like it’s all resting on your shoulders. You feel disconnected from your partner, too tired to text friends back, and you can’t remember the last time you just took an afternoon (heck, even an hour) to yourself. Things feel like they are constantly stacking up. You worry about whether you’ll be able to keep up this pace and how you’ll navigate when the next “to do” reminder pops up.
Stress management isn’t just about finding the next general self-care tool or the top 10 Googled coping strategies. It’s not another self-help expert listing general recommendations about how to better manage your time or what to cut out. It’s not just another confirmation that “this is just a phase”, “you got this”, and “things will eventually get easier.”
Navigating stress and burnout in therapy is about exploring the deeper causes of the issues. It’s about identifying how our histories, cultures, and interpersonal makeup have contributed to our stress responses. It’s about revealing (and holding us accountable for) what behaviors and relationships need to shift so that we can best support ourselves moving forward.

Women who work with me often report feeling relief and gratitude after our work together. They describe feeling more aware of their needs, and how to meet them in effective and sustainable ways. They feel less resentful, self-critical, and overwhelmed, and report feeling more connected to the people and things that bring them joy. They discuss feeling more satisfied at work and more present at home because they aren’t trying to constantly balance both at the same time. They know how to communicate their needs to others and have more self-acceptance about their chosen lifestyles and pace, instead of just comparing themselves to others or societal expectations. They report feeling more peaceful, balanced, and authentic. They have a clear plan and support tools for how to continue supporting themselves after our work together.
